Blemishes are on the surface and are
judged by the unaided eyes. Bumps, pits and lines are
most commonly found. Consider the size, number and
location of these types of blemishes.
- Unblemished: Pearls are
blemish free to the unaided eye.
- Very slightly blemished:
Pearl has very minor bumps or pits, difficult at
first to detect with an unaided eye.
- Slightly blemished:
Minor blemishes covering just small areas of the
surface of the pearl. Detectable with the unaided
eye.
- Blemished: Pearls have
visible blemishes, bumps or pits, which are
significant and cover at least ¼ to ½ of the
surface of the pearl.
- Very blemished: Bumps
and pits are profound, and covers over ½ the
surface of the pearl.
